Madness Avoided: Jason Wu for Target

I did not plan on going to the Jason Wu Collection opening at any Target on February 5, 2012. However, I ran out of milk and needed some Super Bowl supplies that morning. I arrived at 9:30am to Target expecting a bustling atmosphere. That was not the case. Target was not very busy even with Super Bowl that afternoon. I did see a last minute 43 in TV purchase by a gentleman.

The selection of Jason Wu items were miniscule. 1 skirt which I tried on, 2 Tie Neck blouse, 2 Tie Neck Tee, 2 cardigans, 1 dress, 1 sleeveless shirt and NO accessories. I am assuming by the lack of Jason Wu items, there were probably a group of people waiting outside of Target that morning for the Jason Wu opening. I did manage to avoid if any chaos and even tried on a few items.

Jason Wu Top size Small and Jason Wu Pleated Skirt size 8

I was shocked at the Size 8 for the skirt. I normally wear a 6 in bottoms. However, even at a size 8, it is worn pretty high up on the waist rather than by the hips. The loose pleats are pretty and it is lined. There is some weight to this pieces, not as light as one might expect. The length of the skirt hits right above my knee. I already have a pleated skirt from Express (very old piece) so I didn’t pick this black skirt.

Jason Wu Tie Neck Snap Button Blouse in Small, color Blush

This is a GEM! At $34.99, it is priced higher than other Target brands, but it is the same as a Missoni blouse. The fit is very boxy and loose. The material is all right. I have to check but I think it’s polyester. The snap buttons are sturdy. Jean at Extrapetite.com made a comment about the tie neck and how it twists around the neckline. She thinks it might be bad sewmanship of how erratic the twists were. I did think the same when I saw it both on the Blush blouse and on the Tie Neck Tee. However both shirts had the same inconsistent almost hurriedly twists. So it might be purposeful.

Jason Wu Floral Chiffon Dress with Citron Belt

First thought when I put it on without the belt was “Holy Moly! This looks like one of my maternity dresses!!!” It was very billowy and roomy almost like a mumu. However, with the belt the dress becomes more classy and wearable in public! I love the contrast in prints on the front of the dress. There is a sleeveless tank/blouse with a mesh yoke that has the same print as this dress. I saw 1 left on the rack but I have enough tanks. I’m super elated that I managed to purchase 2 Jason Wu items without being shoved and without enduring a chaotic atmosphere. I really hate situations where nasty attitudes come out and play.

So Target.com is sold out in Jason Wu stuff. Did you manage to score any JW items?

J. Crew Fur Vest & Zebra Print

Tops: J. Crew Factory Faux Fur Vest with Pockets, Jess Zebra Sweater by Torn by Ronny Kobo
Bottom: Ann Taylor Loft Modern Skinny Jeans
Boots: Rockport Knee High boots
Handbag: Coach
Sunglasses: Nine West

Pockets! What a lovely fur vest. Yes, it is quite bulky, but it has POCKETS! Pockets solve all decision making problems for me. The fur vest wasn’t as soft as I would have liked but I love the length, the color and it has pockets.

I purchased the Zebra sweater from shopbop.com during the Black Friday sale. I love the loungy feel and the material. However the size is humongous for a Small. I should have sized down yet the sleeves are pretty tight on me at a Small. This sweater features dolman sleeves which I always confuse with bat sleeves. Is there a difference?

The shoulders of this sweater doesn’t appear at my shoulder but midway to my elbow. This creates a dropped effect like it’s too big for the body frame. It’s growing on me. It puffs up the sleeves and makes a cool visual effect on a print sweater.

On another note, my boots from Rockport are COMFY! Its soles have the cushioned sole technology to support the feet from being fatigued. However, another post pregnancy FAIL happened. I purchased a size 7.5 since my feet has gotten bigger. Well Rockport runs large. When I walk, I feel like I’m about to trip 50% of the time. So if you’re interested in Rockport boots, size down.

Back At Target: Missoni for Less

Tops: Missoni Crepe Blouse @ Target, J. Crew Honeycomb in Acorn
Bottom: Citizen of Humanity Flare Ingrid Jeans
Shoes: Naturalizer Bates Bootie

The weather became drastically cold, bearing down to mid 40s. It has been raining and outside has been cloudy, dreary, and moody. That’s what is so different about my outfit. I love the pop of color the Missoni blouse brings to the outfit. I am wearing a XS in the blouse. It fits great however after moving around, its length is a bit short and also the arm length is a tad short. I prefer longer sleeves and a longer length for my shirts. Not a big deal and it’s hardly noticeable.

Target’s Missoni line has been MIA for a quite a while. I was surprised to see it come back after New Years. I assume it was long gone. On this Target.com shopping spree, I managed to pick up the line’s floppy hat, scarf, the zig zag dress (XL in girls sizing – cheapers by $20 compared to Women’s sizing!), and 2 blouses.

While shopping, many Missoni items were still MIA however 4 nights ago, many items popped back up.

A Cake Made For Kings

Being born and raised in New Orleans, makes me a stickler for tradition. Every year around this time, I hunt high and low for King Cakes – the best of the best. Considering I now live in Houston, most of the time I have to settle for sub par King Cake. ::shivers::: Ugh.

King Cakes are like a gigantic twisted or braided doughnut, top with Purple, Green, and Gold sugar and icing. And it comes in so many flavors. The traditional flavor is cinnamon. But I have eaten it with cream cheese, berries, pralines, and even chocolate!

Target in Houston carries an assortment of King Cakes for CHEAP – $5 a cake that feeds 4-6 people. Not bad.

This year I purchased my first King Cake (we eat a cake each week) at Whole Foods. I just thought Whole Foods = more healthy? I have to keep my New Year’s dieting resolution in check somehow.

I purchased a Berry Chantilly flavor which was filled with cream cheese, strawberries and blueberries. Delish! But only I ate it. My husband didn’t like the berries. He rather eat traditional. So this upcoming week, I’m in search for a traditional flavored King Cake.

Cold Day Attire: Tweed + Black Turtleneck

Top: Splendid Turtleneck, Malang Tweed Jacket
Bottom: Citizens of Humanity Flare Ingrid Jeans
Shoes: Naturalizer Bates Booties

What’s so splendid about Splendid, the brand? Comfort, softness, and oh so fitted. My go to brands for turtlenecks have always been Express. I own like 10 Express turtlenecks. But these last two years, Express style have become more Club style fashion – more metallics, more ruffles, and less basic materials and cuts.

I turned to Forever21 to fill the void however, quality is nowhere near the Express turtlenecks. Many pilled within 2 wears. I already see rips and tears at the seams after only several washes. I then purchased a Gap Pure Body Turtleneck. Great quality and it does not fade. However the fabric is very thin so it doesn’t keep me very warm during colder days.

For a couple of years, I kept looking at Splendid and their line of turtlenecks. At $50+ a turtleneck, it is startling for me to spend for only 1 turtleneck. But during the Christmas sale, I decided to try through shopbop.com. If I don’t like it, I could always return it.

The quality of Splendid WOWed me. It is thick and soft and very fitted. I love the feel of the material. However after several wears, I do see some pilling. But being that it’s black helped cover up the pillings.

Gap Parka & Striped Sweater

A trip to Memorial Mall and look what I found? A parka! What surprised me was it looked almost like Wendy’s Lookbook Split Tail Parka she had photographed last month. Yes, I had to pose like Wendy with the top on.

The Gap parka is so nice, priced at $168 and has a removable sherpa lining. Right now at gap.com, it is marked down to $99.00! However it only comes in Medium size as of right. In stores, there were many sizes. In this picture, I’m wearing a size Small.

Hopefully there will be some coupon codes soon and I might pick this parka up.

The sweater has the nautical stripes that are still popular this year. The material isn’t as soft as I thought it would be. So I passed and hopefully something better will come around.

Metallic Mini Skirt + Animal Print Cardigan

Top: J. Crew Print Cardigan
Botton: Ann Taylor Metallic Jacquard Skirt
Shoes: Naturalizer Bates Booties
Belt: Faux Leather Wrap Belt (old)

I rarely wear skirts. I normally wear jeans, pants/leggings, then dresses with leggings and finally skirts. I had this discussion with a friend. Skirts are not “Mom friendly.” Many skirts do not have pockets so I can stick tissue for those runny noses or whatever hair clips, rubber bands, or random “artifact” the kids pick up.

That being said, this pocketless outfit was inspired from a random perusal of my closet. I wanted to put together an outfit beyond my normal comfort level. I still don’t know if I like the skirt. I love the material. The glittery metallic fabric is very different from plain jane office looks. I also like that it’s a good length for me. Not too short, not too long.

The problem is would I wear it more often?

Cold Winter Cape & Tie Bow Blouse

Top: Tie Blouse by Canna (buy)
Bottom: Ann Taylor Loft Slim Leg Cords
Cape: Calvin Klein
Shoes: Seychelles boots

I ♥ this cape! Great color, nice material with satin lining and the belted look gives it a classic ladylike look. I finally had a chance to wear it when Houston got colder earlier this week. The weather has been deliriously crazy! One day it’s raining cats and dogs, the next it’s humid, and right after that it’s freezing! Today, as I’m writing this, it’s happily 72° F outside. Yes, that’s right. We have really no seasons here.

What’s your go to winter wear item this year?

Review: Hot Pink Scala Pumps from ASOS

ASOS SCALA Court Shoe

I noticed these pumps a while back when I was trying to find a cheaper version of J.Crew’s Mona Suede Pumps in a similar Berry color. At $45.45 and free shipping, these ASOS Scala Pumps were a steal! I was pretty excited to get them.

My excitement waned when I looked at the shoes. Very poorly made. As you see in the inset picture above, one of the heels are not aligned with the base. Upon further examination, the shoes looked like they were made out of cardboard. It felt like cardboard too. At a heel height of 4″, I was afraid these shoes might not support my weight.

This shoe will be returned.
